It's that time of the year again

I have a confession to make. Shhh ... don't tell anyone but I have a super power. My nose. It's super sensitive. Okay so maybe it's not a particularly good power to have. Heck it sucks. A whiff of dust and that's my day over. My sinuses will be working overtime. Ironically, the only solution - a strong antihistamine - will sent me to sleep hence killing off the very productivity I was trying to restore. Either way, almost nothing ever gets done hobby-wise. Why am I boring you with information about this pseudo super power of mine? Well, it's time to welcome Malaysia's annual haze event.

A suffocating haze blanketing Kuala Lumpur (modified AP Photo)

Caused mainly by slash and burn farming practices of a neighbouring country, this year's haze doesn't seem as bad as the ones before in terms of visibility. Moreover, there have been the occasional clear days brought about by artificial rain through cloud seeding activities. That being said, my sinuses seem to disagree as I never recalled them reacting so badly to the airborne particulates. Even my eyes hurt. It usually takes me a week or so to adjust to the heavily polluted air so all hobby-related posts should resume by next week. Until then, I'll wallow in self misery and ... nah that's it. Misery just about sums it up.

    1. Thanks Zab. Even on normal days (minus the haze) a day without my sinuses over-reacting is a blessing.

  2. That's quite a sight, or not if you get what I mean? Hope you're back to full speed soon.

    1. Thank you Michael. Three days of respite from the haze has gotten me pumped up only to be deflated by the fact that the haze is expected to return tomorrow and stay until next month due to wind conditions. Sigh. :(

    1. Feeling much better as the haze clears for a limited time. Future looks bleak though as haze is to return and remain until next month. Personally for me, my sinuses give me hell during the nights as I don't use a face mask when I sleep. But otherwise, a mask helps greatly to keep the haze from being too unbearable.

  4. "neighboring country" = Indonesia?

    Hope your situation improves, 4EM.

    1. Yep but it's much more complicated than that. Allegedly a lot of palm oil companies from Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore are involved in the slash and burn practices. Sadly what the international community doesn't know is tons and tons of CO2 is being pumped into the atmosphere. Global warming here we come ... we are there already but I guess humans always want more.

    1. Thank you Simon. The scary thing is the amount of greenhouse gases this haze contributes is mind boggling. If you ask me, I think we are already way past the point of no return ... in terms of the global greenhouse effect that is.

  8. Ouch, that sucks, sorry to read about that. Hope it doesn't take long for you to get better. All the best, Kuan.

    1. Thanks Suber. Feeling much better already after three days of respite from the haze. But forecasts predict a return tomorrow so that sucks. Humans won't be satisfied until they destroy the only world they live in. Even animals are smart enough not to do that.

    2. Well, I think that's a bit unfair. Humans are able to ruin so many worlds! Just give us the chance to reach Mars and you'll see...

  9. Man, my super power is that in winter my knees don't work... I hope you come through your Kryptonite in one piece!

    1. Thanks Ace. LoL ... I guess your knees means you would be the first character that bites the bullet in a George RR Martin Game of Thrones novel. Winter is coming to Westeros afterall. :)

    1. Such scenes are becoming a normal occurrence all over the world. Even those not directly affected will eventually pay the price as the global climate changes. If humans live another 1,000 years they would probably look back at this decade and think ... what a bunch of idiots they were. :(

    2. Let´s be happy that the human race will go extinct with the next world war :-) Better for the planet all together... despite that there are places really profiting from the global warming :-)

We here in Germany became so green that you see photovoltaic on every 4.th roof (number rising), the additional sun hours turns our sour wines into something enjoyable sweet and fruity and the rising oceans will make my house (middle german mountain area called "Taunus") a beach resort within the next 100 years. So I dont have to move to florida to spend my golden years at a beach but the beach comes to me :D

      Win-Win-Win I´d say :D

Despite that I am still waiting for the Shadowrun Dystopia to come true ... MegaCons replacing goverments is already a good step forward. The Matrix is advancing at a steady pace ... so all that is missing is the return of magic and the reawakening of dragons (Dunkelzahn for president!)

    3. Ahhh yes ... I forgot that in the middle of trying to destroy the environment (and claiming that global warming does not exist) humans are busy trying to kill each other because of race and religion. If only double negatives turned out the way a maths problem would. :)

Oh my, am I in the matrix? Bummer. Even in the world of make believe and illusion I cannot be rich and powerful. ;)

  11. I've got a major family history of sinus problems. Neti pot solved them. Every day winter, every other day rest of the time, multiple times a day if allergies or sick. Highly recommend it, since it doesn't involve shoving a ton of pills down your throat!

    1. Thanks so much for the advice Greg. I think I have seen those around but always wondered if they are effective because of how silly one looked when using it. (Never judge a book by its cover never rang more true I guess)
Currently a simple face mask seems to be doing the trick. Also the past five days or so have seen the sun shining despite forecasts of haze. Yeaaa! (Oops, I hope I haven't jinxed it)
